Two Months With The DJI Inspire 1

[By Derrick Threatt for Aeriographer.com] When DJI announced the DJI Inspire 1 last December here in San Francisco I was skeptical.  This radical new departure on designed clouded my vision of the amazing machine that lied beneath its futuristic and Oblivion-esc appearance.  I myself having contributed to a lot of DJI early software and hardware design ideas was not totally convinced until I got one of these systems in my hand.

Apparently, Andrew Adams and Patrick Wieland had the same thoughts and feelings as myself.  These guys took this sub-$4000 machine and turned it into their swiss-army knife do all action shoot camera tool.  Part multirotor, part Steadicam, part brushless gimbal, they made the DJI Inspire 1 do exactly what DJI designers intended it to do.  Inspire.  Here is their reel.  I hope posting this and sharing their work with others will help push this new industry far beyond what the DJI Inspire 1 can do today.

When Andrew sent me his reel it gave me a “kick-in-the-ass” the unleash the full potential of our go-to machine. We have been doing this for almost 9 years now and sure we have a lot of footage that we can put together to make a kick-ass reel, but, their two-month reel they made is beyond great.  It’s amazing! Inspiring!

The DJI Inspire 1 for me has been a great tool as an Aerographer.  It takes out all of the tinkering and hardware/software headaches I was so used to dealing with and allows you to work on what’s most important.  “The money-shot!”  After all, that’s what matters the most.  Dual-operator control with independent controls, Remote camera adjustments, integrated HD video downlinks.  What more can you ask for?  Well, the only thing that the Inspire 1 has that I wished for is dual video downlink so the pilot could have an FPV camera when doing extreme range or follow shots. But nothing will ever be perfect.  The DJI Inspire 1 in the hands if Andrew and Patrick come really close.

If you are in need of a crew who epitomizes the phrase “The Future of Possible” then your search is over.
