Spry: Kickstarter drone that submerges, floats and flies!

Published

on

SwellPro and Urban Drones created notable waterproof UAVs before, but now the two companies teamed up to release what they consider as “the only waterproof drone that submerges under water, floats like a boat and flies in the air.” The Spry quadcopter is unlike any consumer drone at its price range, and it can be backed right now on crowd-funding site Kickstarter until October 1.

How waterproof is Spry?

Both the 4K drone and the controller with a built-in live monitor are waterproofed. The aircraft itself is IP67 rated, so it is protected from dust, and it’s capable of withstanding water immersion between 5.9 inches to 3.28 feet for up to 30 minutes. The controller can be used in direct rain because of its IP66 rating, so it is also dust tight and protected against heavy seas or powerful jets of water.

Spry’s motors are coated with corrosion resistant materials.

The drone can even lift off after being thrown into a body of water.

Camera specs

The camera is enclosed in a polycarbonate dome, and the shading around the dome is designed to filter excessive glare. 2.5K 60 FPS or 1080p 120 FPS can be used to shoot slow motion footage.

Besides being capable of submersion, Spry comes equipped with a 4K camera that can shoot up to 30 FPS using a 64 Mbps bitrate. The 12 MP camera has a fixed f/2.65 aperture, and it is equipped with a Sony 1/ 2.3” CMOS sensor and a lens with a FOV of 92.6°.  Currently, the only supported photo format is JPEG. The camera is also stabilized using a vertical axis mechanical gimbal and electronic stabilization.
