If you are not a serious photographer, you might not know about DxOMark. DxOMark is a website that compares all kinds of cameras and puts them through some really rigorous scientific testing in their lab. Over time, DxOMark scores have become the gold standard for image quality evaluation in digital photography. Just today, DxOMark started evaluating drone cameras. As DxOMark mentioned in their first comparison article:
As drone photography has increased in popularity, manufacturers have responded by creating a wide variety of offerings aimed to satisfy the demand. To help sort through available drones, we have evaluated the quality of photographs produced by some of the most popular drone cameras.

What Drone Cameras Did DxOMark Test?
- DJI Zenmuse X5S
- DJI Zenmuse X4S
- DJI Phantom 4 Pro
- DJI Phantom 4
- GoPro Hero 5
- Yuneec Breeze
4 out of the 6 cameras were made by DJI, so looks a little like an internal competition between DJI flying cameras. But the percentage is just about right, given that more than 80% consumer drone users are choosing DJI drones. However, it is a bit of a shame that DxOMark didn’t rate the DJI Mavic Pro, which is probably the most popular drone in the world today.

Drone Camera Performance
So what do DxOMark’s ratings tell us? Obviously, the Zenmuse X5S for the Inspire 2 is the king here. It shoots 5.2K footage and has very similar specs to the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II, which costs about $2000 dollars. Also, now it’s been confirmed that Phantom 4 Pro and Zenmuse X4S perform similarly low light.
The Phantom 4 Pro even has a slight edge on the X4S. Additionally, the old Phantom 4’s camera absolutely kills the GoPro Hero 5.
And finally, the Yuneec breeze scored the lowest, and it’s only comparable to a Nokia phone’s camera.
