DJI Mavic Platinum vs. DJI Mavic Pro

DJI Mavic Platinum

DJI’s newest Mavic Platinum was just announced at the end of August this year, so We Talk UAV did an independent test to see if it’s truly better. The DJI Mavic Platinum and the DJI Mavic Pro are basically the same drone, but the newer Platinum version has upgraded ESCs and new propellers. Before you invest in a Mavic, make sure to check out this video to see which model is perfect for you:

DJI has claimed that the Mavic Platinum has an extended flight time rated at 30 minutes, which is a three minute increase from the original Mavic. We Talk UAV took this flight time claim to the test and hovered both the DJI Mavic Platinum and the DJI Mavic Pro. The DJI Mavic Platinum received a 24:32 hover time, while the original DJI Mavic Pro only got 22:20. These times are far from the 30 minute claim, but that was expected since the drones were GPS locked and stationary in one location. Actually flying out the drone in the open can result in a flight time closer to 30 minutes, but the controlled hover test was a sufficient testing method because it timed both drones in the same scenario.

Noise Reduction

DJI also claimed a 4 dB noise reduction in the newer Mavic Platinum, so We Talk UAV tested the audio difference with a noise meter. The noise meter wasn’t a professional grade meter, but it still got the job done. While the drone hovered in the air, the Mavic Platinum got a 66,2 dB rating, while the Mavic Pro got a 70,0 dB rating. We Talk UAV also placed both drones on a park bench and used the sound meter to measure the noise difference of the motors running without the propellers attached. The Mavic Platinum scored 64,9 dB, whereas the Mavic Pro scored 73,3 dB. The noise difference ended up being pretty consistent with DJI’s claim.

Noticeable Differences

The takeoff on the Mavic Platinum seemed to be faster than the Mavic Pro. It’s not that big of a difference, but you can watch the video to see for yourself.

Original Mavic Propellers on the DJI Mavic Platinum

The original Mavic propellers were placed on the Mavic Platinum, and there ended up being a slight difference. The drone with the older propellers are compatible with the Platinum, but We Talk UAV concluded a minor reduction in flight stability.

Price Difference

The new color, the upgraded ESCs and propellers on the Mavic Platinum costs $1399 for the Fly More Combo, whereas the original Mavic Pro Fly More Combo is still being sold for $1299.

The ESCs, or the speed control of the motors, is the main upgrade in the newer version. The DJI Mavic Platinum is simply better because DJI placed their latest technology to maximize flight efficiency. In the long run, a $100 price difference is worth it!
