Hasselblad: Start Of An Iconic Camera Company

Consider Hasselblad. An iconic camera company that was the epitome of what a great camera company was all about. Not as known as say Cannon, they were everything that a fledgling photographer could want for a simple reason:. Hasselblad had a stellar reputation of being a camera company that once you could afford one of their cameras, they had your back. Customer service withstanding, the mere sight of Hasselbladhaving one of these cameras in your arsenal suggested that you were in a different class of photographers.

Just how iconic is Hasselblad? For starters, during the 1960’s when the Apollo program first landed human beings on the moon, they used a modified Hasselblad to take with them. In fact, Nasa used Hasselblad in the 1960’s for a number of programs. The result of this was a motor driven camera that appeared in the form the 500EL camera, the direct result of the Nasa collaborations.

The Iconic Company Comes Into The Digital Age

Like many other camera companies, once the digital age came in the 1990’s, Hasselblad had its challenges. It seemed as if the camera company was going to be left in the dust as the digital age progressed. That was to change in 2002, an innovated camera system known as the H1 camera system was invented. This was in collaboration with allowed other Digital Camera Back companies such as Phase One to fit a digital camera back while Hasselblad focused on creating a new state of the art type of camera. The results were staggering as many photographers embraced this collaboration. However, all of that was about to change.

The Iconic Company Has An Unexpected Friend

In reality, Hasselblad was in serious need of financial support. They had a camera X1D that was getting great reviews, but production setbacks provided a grim reality that Hasselblad had no real financial power to keep it going. DJI soon became a major stakeholder and is currently the owner of this camera as well as the stellar reputation that remains intact. So what is the future of Hasselblad now? Will DJI be able to help Hasselblad remain a competitive camera company?DJI and Hasselblad

DJI And Hasselblad Come Together

Most recently, both companies announced their first aerial photography package pairing DJI’s M600 drone with a Hasselblad A5D. “Combining best-in-class aerial optics with the world’s most powerful aerial platform is a natural development for DJI and Hasselblad,” said Perry Oosting, CEO of Hasselblad, in a related statement. “We are delighted to provide this unique bundle to professional photographers, surveyors, and mappers.” This seems like a natural pairing and certainly, we can expect more to come.

DJI Technologies may be a Drone Company but its interest also involves cameras coming up with such innovative 360 cameras such as the Osmo as well as higher end items. Combine a Ronin-MX with an A5D, Hasselblad’s medium format camera and the results are amazing. Time will tell what the future DJI and Hasselblad may have for this partnership.
