Drones come in all shapes and sizes, and they’re all designed to give advantageous perspectives. Whether flying in the sky for a bird’s-eye view or droning underwater to capture a true fisheye perceptive, drones are built for various tasks and purposes. One concerned dad in Arizona realized drone technology was the answer to help prevent kids from drowning in pools, so he developed a floating drone called Morningstar SOS. The concept drone is designed to monitor a pool from above the water and underwater. Besides live monitoring, Morningstar SOS can also be used to notify an emergency contact with a push of a button. Inside Edition interviewed the inventor of the pool drone and uploaded the video on YouTube:
Just like any consumer drone, the Morningstar SOS is equipped with a camera system that provides a live video feed to a smartphone. The top camera is equipped with a motion detector that notifies parents when someone is approaching the pool. The bottom camera acts as a second pair of eyes underwater, and it can also be set to trigger a second notification when someone jumps into a pool. If a true emergency arises, the app can be used to call 911.
The pool drone is shaped like a fidget spinner, and it is designed with solar panels to provide constant power.
Why the pool drone was created
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention concluded that “about one in five people who die from drowning are children 14 and younger.” Since drownings can happen in mere seconds, Morningstar SOS was created to instantly notify first responders. Even though it’ll still take some time before first responders physically reach the pool, the few seconds saved can make a difference between life and death.
Morningstar SOS can be used as extra security in any water environment since it is splash-proof, but the main target market are families with a pool and children.
